Hats Off Long Beach is a research and photo project I started after attending my first graduation ceremony here in May 2017. Amidst all the celebrations (and confetti throwing), I was awed by the creative, profound, and amusing messages students created on their graduation cap mortarboards. I wanted to learn more about this trend and hear from students about the stories behind their designs.
With assistance from the Alumni Association, I reached out to 2017 graduates and asked them to submit photos of their caps and written reflections. In particular, I was interested in the experiences of those graduates who identify as "students of color." Written entries are included here in full with only minor edits for typos and clarity. I am currently at work writing a few articles on the project and will post when available.
I hope that this project (at least a little inspired by "Humans of New York") helps us better understand and appreciate the journeys of students through higher education.
